Diving south of golden gate

Hi Everybody,

I'm new to this sight but I've been Ab diving 35 years, started when I was 18. Dang, time flies. Anyway I contacted the head DFG honcho last month about the possibility of re-opening our areas near Santa Cruz. We spoke at length on the phone, nice guy. His respone was "Not in our lifetimes buddy". He stated that the FNG biologists still feel that the 'withering foot' disease was still prevalent in the area. Ok prove it. He stated that he didn't have ANY current information he could forward me.

It's been what 15 years since the closure? I can't remember exactly. Anyway I have done some free diving in a lot of my old spots down here. The abs are everywhere and they look real healthy. I'm not saying FNG is wrong in retaining the ban, I just wish thay would give us some evidence to support their position.

Does anybody else have any further information on this? Should we press FNG to fully explain thier rationale? You know how it is when Fish and Game gets a policy, they will fight to the death to keep it even in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary. I'm sick and tired of having to drive 3-5 hours to get my abs when I have 'em in my own backyard.

I'll say this, if there is enough interest to pursue this I'll do the legwork. Heck even if the season was shorter here, or the limit reduced it would be a plus. Maybe even stagger the seasons, close it up there and open it here for a limited time...I don't know. But I do know the the abs are out there. FNG probably figures making us drive north allows them to concentrate enforcement in a smaller area. Which is great I'm all for as many FNG Wardens as we can hire but dang "LET US DIVE WHERE WE LIVE AND PAY TAXES!"

Thanks, great site, I'll get off my soapbox now...

Marty

I am all for it

I am all for it but I doubt it will ever happen Marty you should go check out and join my web site nor cal underwater hunters.com here is a link http://norcalunderwaterhunters.com/forum/index.php
we are highly invovled with the fish game an abalone managment plans so go over and post up I am sure you will have quite the following and surport come join us. it would help with the pressure shift due to the mlpa's and just so you all know do not be surpised and rememeber where you heard it first next year take will be cut to probably 2 a day and some other sort of restriction shorter season take only certian days somthing trust me on this.for more info on this go t my web site and mlpa abalone managment thread.

Thanks for replying Matt. I

Thanks for replying Matt. I will be completly pissed if they lower the already low limit.
I respect the heck out of the individual men and women of the FNG, but as an organization they consistantly blow it.
I could go on and on but eventually we will ALL become poachers. I AM going to get my abs, the hell with those guys. I've even flirted with the idea of telling the FNG and the media that I am going to poach one abalone...say near Davenport (thumbnail parking area) just so I can get arrested in order to force the FNG to court so they will have to prove their case. This is so much BS! I'm past my prime for ab diving but I would be doing this as a public service for everyone else. What is it with the abalone that the FNG feels they have to be the knights on a white horse. The sumbitches are everywhere. Stopping the taking of sea urchin would be one thing they could do to protect the abs.
Heck nobody in the US eats sea urchin eggs anyway.

Red abalone south of the gate central coast

Marty,

If you want, I can suggest the following. Go dive one of your past favorite area's south of the gate and provide (post)the abalone counts. Record all abalone seen. Survey an area of 3ft by 180 ft. (1.5 meters by 60 meters). For a single diver or if there are two of you, traveling side by side, each diver shall surveys his three foot span by 90ft. (3 meter by 30 meters).

I do not know who you spoke with at the DFG, but the information was not entirely correct. More to come once and if you do the survey.

Thanks,
Bill
