Wardens Say Group Took Undersized Mollusks, Hid Them On Beach

CASPAR, Calif. -- Eleven suspected abalone poachers are under arrest after state game wardens watched the group catch, hide and transport the protected mollusks.

The California Department of Fish & Game said Friday that wardens watched the 11 men and women take mostly undersized abalone from the ocean at low tide and then hide them in tall grass on the beach.

The abalone were later picked up by a van and taken to a hotel for storage.

Divers are legally allowed per day three abalone -- which can fetch up to $100 each on the black market. The annual total is 24. The wardens found 166 abalone with the group Wednesday.

Officials said the suspects were charged with felony conspiracy to harvest abalone for commercial purposes."
