Sunday 4-5-09 was a great day to dive

6:00 Sunday morning was cold in Petaluma and just as cold when we arrived at the coast. We got to Sunken reef campground around 8:30. The ocean was flat, two foot breakers on the beach with larger swells every 3 to 5 minutes. Surprisingly not very many other divers. As we watched the surf a sea otter came to shore within ten feet from us and began to preen itself. We swam out about 50 yards and picked the first three abbs we found in 15 feet of water with six foot visibility at the bottom. There was no wind and the sun soon came out and warmed us up. I got home at 11:00, cleaned my dive gear and abalone and was rewarded with an abalone pearl in one of them. (See the picture in the gallery). A great way to start off the season.
