A day of Ab diving and spear fishing along the sonoma coast 9-14-08

Rob and I launched my Zodiac out of Ocean Cove at 8:30 Sunday morning and screamed up to Sea Ranch which seemed like minutes due to the near perfect day on the water. The water was lying flat and the wind was extremely low. The small presence of fog was the only thing that kept this day from being just perfect. We hit the south end of Sea Ranch for about an hour where we both hunted for abs. We both only took one each when we decided to relocate. We end up hitting two more spots that weren't producing much so we hit Richardsons and limited out there, where we ended up with five 8&3/4 and Matt's 9 incher. We then headed back to Ocean Cove to grub and load tanks and unloaded the abs. We loaded and shot out and hit around the north corner of Ocean cove. There we descended to 80' and began our hunt. There were gophers all over the place with blues hovering above us the whole time. Vis. was about 15' and water temp was 48 degrees. I had my four gophers on my stringer when I noticed a HUGE mouth in a hole almost looking at me. I knew what it was right away and shot it in the hole. I pulled out a 32 inch lingcod and TRIED to quickly string'em. That was a fight of it's own! Then we delt with a good old seal following us around for awhile when I felt a tug at my side where the fish were guess who wass trying to get an easy lunch. Soon after that nitrogen levels were getting a bit high so we ascended and went home with a gang of fish and abalone. Not after I had to re-descend to unattatch the anchor line from a crack in the sea floor.in all another great day. But any time you get in and get out safly is a good day and is only a bonous that we came home with fish and abalone.

Nice report Matt. A couple
Nice report Matt. A couple buddies and I were out at a not so secret rock this Sunday as well. The seas were great and we saw a buch of fish too, none as big as that bad boy though. Too bad I left the spear in the car. It alsways seems to happen for me that way: No spear - lots of fish, take the spear- no fish.
We did all get our abs, my best was around 8.75". I'm still lookin for that big'n, only six left for the year though. Maybe I'll find it on the next trip. :hmmm
