Mother of Pearls

Bigfoot's picture

First off, its rare to find pearls in abalone bigger than grains of sand or a pencil eraser, though they ARE out there.

from my experience, all the nice round pearls i have found have been in the big green, and sometimes brown sack. normally you can feel them right through the sac or they might even be right under the skin. if you see a black spot, investigate by feeling if its hard or not. If it is hard, poke it with your knife and draw it out. I have heard of people pulling pearls from the shell itself... inside those bubbles, but i have never found anything other than dead shell or nothing at all.

I have seen some people take all the guts, cut it open and spread it out on a cutting board and diligently search for even the smallest pearls. That seems like too much work for some shiny sand, but to each their own.

One think i recommend doing is to have a cup or a small little jar to keep all your pearls in.. especially when you are pulling them from the ab... because after dong this, the first thing you are going to want to do is clean your hands and everything around you and that is a perfect chance to lose the small little shiny object you just a lot of time looking for.

My Pearls

All my pearls I have found in the gut sack right under the outer skin. Every time I try and feel my way through the gut sack I give up, all the times I have looked their, I have had no luck. I'll stick to the easy pick’en ones. Defiantly carry a pearl jar with you; I don't know how many I have lost down the drain. Defiantly some good info your passing on Bigfoot.
