measure 8" abs
I dont know if it wil help anyone but i measure my abs with a multi gauge. My gauge is a 10" on one side and an 8" on the other. Im not saying you need a 10" gauge but if you carry a 8" gauge always and nothing other you should not have any problems. Even in 8-10' of water there are plenty of 8" abs also taking bigger abs prolongs the groth cycle of of the smaller ones......just a helpful hint.....
yap thats right, you should
yap thats right, you should also pluck an ab alot biger than 7" so you don't half to woriey about if the shell chips.

To answer your question:
Chase you measure the abalone at the largest point; from outside edge to outside edge.
Keep in mind that if the shell breaks or even chips you need to keep all of the pieces to show that it was a legal size. Abalone must remain attached to the shell when in transport.
Have a great day,
