Preserving your trophy
What's the best way to preserve your trophy shell and keep it shiny?
I read the Abalone Book and followed the directions but my
shell still has this dull ashy color. The book suggests putting
mineral spirit on the shell to shine it up. I've tried that and
the shell looks great, beautiful red and glossy. An hour later, it
returns to the dull ashy red color.
How do you keep the natural shiny red color?
My suggestion... and question?
First is mineral spirit the same as mineral oil?
My father has a shell that was bleach, cleaned, and rubbed with mineral oil which can be found in any drug store (sometimes used as a laxative). What we do it pour the oil on the shell or cloth and rub it in. It preserves the shell pretty well.

You are right! I was using mineral spirit and mineral oil works much better.
Home depot does not carry mineral oil anymore but Orchard supply did. I'll
look for it the next time I go to Walgreens.
